Do you know someone who's never skied or snowboarded before but, if the price were right, would give it a go? How about if a free season pass was the reward?

Snowbasin has done just that with its Learn and Earn Program. The deal gives beginners a chance for free lift tickets for the rest of the year if they complete 14 hours of instruction. The total cost, including rentals and lift tickets, comes to $347 for adults, and $297 for youths ages 7 and older.

Beginners or anyone returning from a long layoff start with three, two-hour lessons on any day of the week to get things rolling. Next, they move into the "recreation" category, where they enroll in four, two-hour sessions of their choice on either a Saturday or Sunday. Classes gather at 9:30 a.m. and again at 1 p.m.

All who complete these two steps receive a pass for the rest of the season on all 3,000 acres at Snowbasin, beginning Feb. 1. An adult season pass normally goes for $1,100, according to Snowbasin's website.

Participants should pre-register by calling 801- 620-1015. They should plan to arrive at the Snowbasin Snowsports Learning Center, located across from the main lodge, at least 90 minutes before the time of the lesson in order to have time to rent equipment.
