It's quite a journey to have dinner at Der Fondue Chessel at Keystone. You'll first have to walk through River Run to the gondola. Take the River Run Gondola to the top, and then head over to the Outpost Gondola at the top of North Peak. You'll reach the Outpost Restaurant, which sits at 12,000 feet above sea level, at the end of the ride. "It's takes about 40 minutes to get there from the base area to the restaurant. But you'll have amazing views of the bowls, and you can see some amazing peaks around Keystone," according to Keystone's Ryan Whaley.
Der Fondue Chessel is family fun at its best, as the family is seated at big tables, they'll share the fondue pot and raclette, while enjoying live Bavarian-style music from a group known as "Those Austrian Guys." They're kind of like an oompah band, with songs like the Beer Barrel Polka and the Chicken Dance. Families usually end up standing on the chairs, dancing the chicken dance in the middle of the restaurant. There is also a magician.
There are plenty of options to go with your fondue, such as seafood, steak, and vegetarian, along with different cheeses. Waiters show you how to dip the foods in the different sauces. Whaley says, "The kids love it because they can cook their own stuff."
The Outpost also has an international feel with high-flying flags around the room, and a roaring fireplace to keep everyone warm. The hours are 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. Call ahead to make a reservation.
