Sierra Avalanche Center runs their largest fundraising event annually January through March. Six ski resorts around the greater Tahoe region donate a limited number of lift tickets for a specific date while participants purchase the lift tickets at a discount and the center gets all the proceeds.
Ski days for the avalanche center kick off at Bear Valley Mountain Jan. 14 with $20 lift tickets compared to the regular $62 rate. The Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe day Jan. 22 offers a $35 lift ticket that runs about half the cost of rates at the ticket window.
Five February ski days are offered, each with lift tickets costing $45--a 41-49 percent discount off the daily rate. Northstar-at-Tahoe's ski day is Feb. 6, and Kirkwood Mountain Resort's day is Feb. 27. Heavenly Mountain Resort offers three ski days for the avalanche center Feb. 8-10.
Sugar Bowl Resort wraps up the ski days March 27 with a $45 lift ticket. Regular adult full day lift tickets at Sugar Bowl cost $71.
Fundraising from the ski days provides the majority of Sierra Avalanche Center's annual budget. Avy forecasters are available at the events to answer questions and dole out raffle prizes.
Tickets for ski days must be purchased online through Sierra Avalanche Center, not through the resorts. Purchasers redeem the non-refundable, non-transferable voucher on the ski day for a lift ticket at the center's booth.
