Breckenridge has received a bountiful early-season snowfall, nearly 11 feet the first four weeks of the season, which means an extra reason to celebrate Ullr Fest this year. The 48th annual event takes place Jan. 9-15.
"It's a lot of fun, and an old tradition dating back to 1963," explained Rachel Zerowin, Breckenridge Resort Chamber. "Ullr is the Norse God of snow, and you'll see skiers and snowboarders wearing horned Viking helmets. Over 12,000 people will line the streets of town to see the Ullr parade and crazy float-goers skiing off jumps on Main Street. It's a week-long party.
"The fest kicks off on Sunday (Jan. 9) with the Ullr Skating Party and continues into Monday with the Ullr Nordic Party, where we crown 2011 royalty," she told OnTheSnow. "Main Street shuts down on Thursday (Jan. 13) for the parade, and there are games, parties, and plenty of fun to be had all week long."
In addition to the skating party and parade, other highlights during the week, in addition to all the great skiing and riding, includes; the Ullympics, which includes a frying pan toss Tuesday; Breck Ascent, an uphill snowshoe race Wednesday; Ullr Comedy Night Friday; and a Chilly Chili Cook-off Saturday, which includes live entertainment and activities for the whole family.
