The annual Winter Wine Festival at Sun Peaks Resort adds more flavors in its events this year. New events have been added to appeal to a wider variety of wine lovers.
The festival, which runs Jan. 15-23, packs in more than 20 events to celebrate wine. The Okanagan Wine Festivals Society and Tourism Sun Peaks, organizers of the festival, are broadening the scope of the events this winter to provide more than the education "We've kept the signature events, but added in more casual, new-style events to attract a younger crowd rather a formal sit down education about wine," Melanie Simmons from Tourism Sun Peaks told us. "It now includes options for the formal education for wine connoisseurs and the more casual events for just those who like to drink wine."
Several new events break away from the traditional wine tastings. The Farm-to-Fork Kick-off Jan. 15 features a tapas and wine reception with live unplugged cover songs of The Rolling Stones. "It's a showcase for local wines and foods from local restaurants that use local products," explained Simmons.
The Fire and Ice evening, also Jan. 15, transports wine lovers to the tropics with island music, tapas, and local Okanagan wines. A fire-spinning display launches the event with features an icewine cocktail and an outdoor patio ice bar.
The festival finishes with two breakfast buffets. One new breakfast covers crepes with a flambé made from Okanagan fruit wines.
The headliner event, the Sun Peaks WestJet Progressive Wine Tasting, takes place Jan. 21. Twenty wineries set up around the village, while participants stroll outside. "It's definitely the pinnacle event with a special ambiance, walking around outside trying varietals," said Simmons.
Tickets for the different festival events cost $19-125. Most of the Winter Wine Festival events take place in the evening, allowing for skiers and snowboarders to play on the slopes during the day and then party with wines at night.
Packages are available for the festival, too. Some packages include lodging; others bundle up two or more events. The Ski, Sip, and Stay Package combines three nights of lodging with two days of skiing and three wine festival events. It starts at $450 per person based on double occupancy.
