Wintergreen Resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia is opening a new skating rink Dec. 18.
The classic frozen pond is in the heart of the resort's Mountain Village, within easy walking distance of shops, accommodations, and eateries.
The rink is called Shamokin Ice, and measures 95 feet long and 45 feet wide, with more than 4,000 square feet of ice made by a 150-ton ice rink chiller.
Skating will be scheduled in 90-minute sessions, with the grand opening starting at 1:30 p.m. and continuing under the lights until 10 p.m.
Each session will be limited to 60 skaters on the frozen oval.
Shamokin Ice is near Wintergreen's three restaurants: Copper Mine Bistro, The Edge, and Pryor's Cafeteria.
The rink is available for group reservations, skating parties, birthdays, broomball events, and more.
Shamokin Ice will be open through March 13, on this schedule: Fridays 5 to10 p.m.; Saturdays and holiday Sundays 1:30 to 10 p.m.; Sundays and holiday Mondays 1:30 to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays 5 to 8 p.m. It will be closed only on non-holiday Mondays and Wednesdays.
