Aspen is known for its first-class dining and restaurants. But one place that has been in the town for nearly 40 years is still packing them in. You'll find the Hickory House just as you hit Main Street in Aspen. Manager Frank Fasanella says, "It's the first place you see when coming into town and the last place you see when leaving. It's easy to spot because there is a big bear on the roof. That bear has been there since Day One," says Fasanella.
Hickory House is famous for its ribs. It's so famous that their claim to fame is that Oprah Winfrey enjoyed a sloppy plate full of ribs on her show in Chicago. The baby-back dinners range from full racks to two racks and combos. The plate is piled high with smoked, BBQ slathered ribs, along with fries, baked beans, cole slaw, and garlic bread. The menu says, "We lightly baste our ribs while grilling to keep them from drying out." You can eat in, take out, or they'll deliver.
Groups also love "The Feast," which features "All of our BBQ at one time!" It includes ribs, chicken, pork, beef, corn on the cob, baked beans, cole slaw, garlic bread, and a bottle of Hickory House BBQ sauce. It's something to order for a group.
Fasanella says the restaurant is great for groups as prices are reasonable and tables are moved together easily, "in a very relaxed and laid back atmosphere." Aspen is also known for its hockey teams, and visiting teams in town for tournaments regularly frequent the Hickory House.
The restaurant also serves breakfast. "It's the best breakfast in town," boasts Fasanella. They even have the "Locals' Table" where only the locals can sit, and breakfast is served family-style.
