Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort test-drove a new beginner ski and snowboard program last year that proved so successful that it's back for a second year. Beginners can learn to ski or ride in five lessons with season pass bonuses for those who graduate.

The resort's Ski Or Ride In 5 program met the goal of getting skiers and riders off the bunny hill and on to intermediate slopes. "It was extremely popular," Amy Ohran, director of snowsports, told OnTheSnow. "Out of the 542 people who did the program, we had a 95 percent completion rate. Our goal was to really create converted skiers-people who ski five times a year and classify themselves as intermediate."

The program, which costs $199 per person, begins Jan. 3. Participants are equipped with gear, lift tickets, and two-hour lessons for five days, which can be taken on consecutive days or sporadically through Mar. 20. Lessons for the program are available seven days per week in the morning or afternoon.

"We wanted to get participants to be skiers for life," said Ohran, explaining how most skiers and riders can get off the beginner lift and onto intermediate runs by the fifth lesson. "We had a phenomenal success rate."

Participants who graduate from the program by completing all five lessons by Mar. 20 get several bonuses that last into the third year. Graduates 18 years and younger get a free season pass good for the remainder of this season. Those older get a 12-day pass valid for the rest of this season. Mt. Bachelor's season usually runs until Memorial Day. Graduates also get 50 percent off a season pass for next year and 25 percent off a season pass for the following year.

The program is for those who have never tried skiing or snowboarding, ages 6 through adult. "But is can also be for those who have never gotten comfortable on beginner runs," added Ohran.

Reservations are not needed for the five lessons; however, you can register now for the program by phone. Each participant is issued a Ski Or Ride In 5 Photo Pass to redeem lessons, lifts, and rentals. Participants should plan to arrive at the Sunrise Lodge Snowsports and Rental Center one hour prior to the lesson.
