Southern California skiers and riders got another boost during a snowstorm prior to Thanksgiving. The new snow coupled with cold temperatures for snowmaking allowed Snow Valley Mountain Resort and Mt. Baldy to start up winter operations.

Snow Valley opened Nov. 24 for the season. The resort offers skiing, snowboarding, and a snow play area. Learn to ski or snowboard packages are available to get first timers ages 13 and older on the slopes. The package includes a lower mountain lift ticket, a 90-minute beginner group lesson, and rental equipment. Beginner group lessons start three times daily. The learning packages cost $69 on weekdays and $85 on weekends or holidays. The package can be purchased online.

Mt. Baldy opened its Monster Tubing Park on Thanksgiving Day. The resort was aiming to open slopes for skiing and snowboarding on Thunder Mountain over the holiday weekend.

Learning packages are available daily for beginner skiers and snowboarders. The packages include rental skis or snowboards, a 60- to 90-minute lesson, and a beginner area lift ticket. The group lessons are offered three times daily. Learn to ski or snowboard packages range $29-69, depending on age, duration, and date. Half day and weekday programs cost less than weekend, full day, or holiday programs. The packages must be purchased at the resort.

Beginners should come prepared for cold weather with hats, gloves, and warm clothing. Plan to arrive one hour prior to lesson times to allow for getting rental gear.
