Sunday River is combining geo-location technology and social media in an app called Sunday River Patches.
The app taps into nostalgia for the embroidered patches of the early days of skiing.
Sunday River Patches offers 25 e-patches earned by checking in to 25 key Happy Places throughout the resort.
The resort's Nick Lambert said the app encourages Sunday River's Facebook fans to interact with one another while exploring the resort, and offers a way to tie guests to the mountain through social media.
Sunday River Patches can be added to anyone's Facebook profile by first visiting the Patches tab on the official Sunday River Facebook Page. Once Patches is activated, guests can use their mobile phone to check in at various locations around the mountain to earn virtual patches including an ‘Explorer' patch, ‘Buddy' patch, or ‘Powder Day' patch.
"Our plan down the road is to combine Patches with Facebook Deals and provide incentives for skiers and riders interested in exploring our resort further. For some skiers, their Happy Place might be a patch unlocked on a powder day. For others, it will be unlocking a deal on a half-priced appetizer at the Foggy Goggle," Lambert said
