Sometimes women feel more comfortable being taught by women, especially when it comes to snow sports. Men and women ski and snowboard differently and have different equipment needs.
Boston Mills/Brandywine, between Cleveland and Akron, is holding Women's Snow Discovery, a six-week long program, this winter, and signup deadline is Dec. 15. Cost of the program is $229, which includes a lift ticket. If you need rental equipment, skis or snowboard, the cost is $329. It's available for women 21 and older.
Times available are Tuesday 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Wednesday 7 to 8:30 p.m. You must take the lesson at the same time each week. Snow Discovery participants enjoy additional time on the slopes at Boston Mills after the lesson and before, except for the first meeting. Participants are welcome to visit the ski area on their scheduled day for the rest of the season at no additional cost, after the six-week program is complete
Female skiing guru Jeannie Thorn, says that women ski different, because they are different.
"Women stand differently on a ski because of different weight distribution than men," she told OnTheSnow. "They have different needs and look at ski terrain differently than men do. Women who have been to women-only clinics say they come away with a lot more sense of what they need in equipment and how to ski; to turn, edge control, weight distribution, posture, etc. It will make a difference in just the way they look at a slope and give their confidence a big boost."
It's also a great way to meet like-minded women and enjoy a little camaraderie on the slopes. Sometimes groups form and stay together long after the lessons are done.
