Love exploring new resorts but want to stuff in the most slope time that you can? Lake Tahoe, Calif., is one place you can pack in a new resort a day without spending inordinate hours on the road. Increased flights make the region easier to access.

Lake Tahoe resorts cluster in a compact area. Ski resorts circle Lake Tahoe almost a snowball's throw from each other, contrary to many ski areas that sprawl long distances from each other across the West. Looping the lake requires a vehicle, but air travelers into Reno can rent a car with snow tires to handle the drive.

Those flying into Reno-Tahoe International Airport to start the trip will find additional flights available this year. The airport added 17 new flights into the region, including additional service from the East Coast. Southwest Airlines, which is one of the region's major carriers, is favored by skiers and snowboarders with it Bags Fly Free policy.

You can hop hotels every night to sample lodging options, or reduce the lodging changes to two base camps as the close proximity of the resorts makes visiting several resorts from one hotel possible. Choose one lodging location around North Lake Tahoe in Truckee, at resorts, or in any one of the small towns to ski several. Then move to a second hotel at South Lake Tahoe on the California or Nevada side of town to finish up.

North Lake Tahoe resorts sit within a 10- to 30-minute drive of each other. Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe is the closest resort to Reno with a 25-minute drive. Driving counter-clockwise around the lake puts you at Northstar-at-Tahoe for a day of corduroy carving before hitting the giant high alpine bowls of Squaw Valley USA and Alpine Meadows.

South Lake Tahoe resorts spread out a little more. Hit Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood driving 20 to 35-minutes over two different mountain passes, but access the Heavenly Mountain Resort gondola from town. The drive from South Lake Tahoe back to Reno takes less than one hour to complete the loop.
