Revelstoke Outdoors Centre (ROC) at Revelstoke Mountain Resort is a one-stop shop where skiers and snowboarders can put together adventures that run from paragliding to instructor training. Those looking to pack in several adventures into one trip should look into their ultimate packages that combine four different activities at the resort.
ROC, which opened last winter in the Nelsen Lodge, serves as a one-stop location for arranging lessons, cat or heli trips, backcountry touring, Mountain Awareness Courses. The centre was designed to lessen the leap from lift-served to backcountry adventures.
The Ultimate ROC Pack lines up four activities in four days to give guests a big taste of interior British Columbia. The program targets advanced intermediate to expert skiers and especially those dying to make the leap to out-of-bounds adventures. The one pre-requisite is having the stamina and leg strength to do it all.
The first day serves as a training day with Revelstoke's Cat/Heli Prep Program. Instructor guides help hone skills to adapt your technique to the terrain and pluck lines through trees in preparation for the remaining three days of adventure.
The second day features a leap outside the controlled inbounds conditions with cat skiing. "It's not slackcountry," ROC manager Dan Sculnick told us. The cat tours three bowls that drop into glades for a taste of alpine and forest skiing.
The third day rips up in the air for heli skiing with Selkirk Tangiers. Runs of the day, which may consists of skiing glaciers or old growth forests, can be plucked from the 500,000 acres of terrain adjacent to two Canadian national parks.
The last day uses the lifts to access the Revelstoke backcountry where guides lead skiers on routes down Mount Mackenzie. "The backcountry skiing on the back side of the resort is phenomenal," added Sculnick. Touring equipment is required for the excursion.
The Ultimate ROC Pack, which costs $2,888 CAN for two people must schedule Day 1 on a Monday or Wednesday. Avalanche beacons, probes, and shovels are required, but are available to rent with a pack for $30 CAN per person. Touring rental costs $55 CAN per person. Advance bookings are recommended.
