Two women donned in lime green jackets and big smiles tested a new ski program for women last season at Sun Peaks Resort. The program proved so successful that they are launching it for real this winter.
Chase Wolfe and Laurie White, certified ski instructors and previous Sun Guides, launched Ski Sisters, a program to provide more fun for women on the slopes at Sun Peaks. "I can't tell you how many women want to go through glades or ski something new, but don't know how to do it," White told OnTheSnow. "So many women lose interest because they don't have someone to ski with."
Ski Sisters targets women who are skiing alone and not enjoying the experience. Women can spend a half or full day cruising with the Ski Sisters to find fun places to explore at their level. Building confidence is key.
The sisters take a unique approach, building skills to conquer specific terrain, such as steeps, glades, or crud. "We go at their pace. We slip the teaching under the table for terrain specific situations, and a lot of women come out not even realizing they've been taught, but excited because they did something new," said White.
The Ski Sisters are available Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to start the season. They may add more days to the schedule, if necessary. Skiing with the Ski Sisters, which costs $75 CAN for half day or $135 CAN for full day, is booked through the ski school. Each ski sister takes no more than three women, so the whole group can ride the quad together.
"I've had women ski pure crap that they never would have because we just show them how to have fun on the slope," said White. "So many lessons are about learn and drill. This is more about flying free."
