Heavenly broke ground in August on a new mid-mountain lodge, the resort's first new lodge in more than three decades. The lodge-christened the Tamarack Lodge-is located at the top of Heavenly's Gondola, where it will service skiers and snowboarders as well as those snowshoeing, ski biking, sledding, and tubing at Adventure Peak.

"The Tamarack Lodge is situated in the absolute ideal location at the top of our Gondola, accessible to skiers and snowboarders, as well as sightseers, both summer and winter," said Pete Sonntag, Heavenly's general manager and vice president. "We think this lodge is the crowning achievement in Phase One of Heavenly's re-development. It's great to see Vail Resorts pushing forward and investing in its assets, even in a challenging economic environment."

The lodge interior at 15,000 square feet will feature a food court, seating area for 500 people, and a bar. A 4,000-square-foot deck will hold another 250 diners. Forty-foot-high windows-running floor to ceiling-look upslope, and large timber framing and high ceilings open the room to access the natural light from the oversized windows. Wood, stone, and granite countertops are hallmarks of the lodge along with rustic chandeliers in the dining area.

Heavenly is building the lodge according to LEED standards. The resort intends to apply for LEED certification when construction is finished.

Completion of the Tamarack Lodge, named for the nearby lift, is expected mid-winter in time for a Feb. 1 opening. Heavenly updates its blog with videos of the construction every few weeks. Check online to watch its progress.
