The unveiling of the new Black Mountain Express detachable quad chairlift will highlight the kickoff to the 2010-11 ski season at Arapahoe Basin. The new lift will replace the old Exhibition fixed-grip triple chair.
A late summer BBQ showcased the new lift was the first look at what's to come. "All the towers are in place as well as the upper and lower terminals," says A-Basin's Leigh Hierholzer. "Now the haul rope and chairs need to be mounted and a load test completed and we'll be ready to go."
A-Basin hopes to be one of the first resorts to open for the 2010-11 ski season in Colorado. Hierholzer says the chair is expected to be completely installed by the first week in October in order to have the wheels turning and ready for skiers and riders by mid-October.
Black Mountain Express will load 2,000 people per hour and unload them at mid-mountain in three minutes cutting ride time in half from the old chair. The new top terminal is located west and uphill from the old Exhibition Lift terminal and the Black Mountain Lodge. The lift's base-area terminal remains in the same location.
Winter and summer guests will be able to load the new chair more easily and enjoy fewer stops during the ride due to the detachable construction. Black Mountain Lodge will now be more accessible for foot passengers attending special events or simply taking advantage of the Continental Divide's breathtaking views.
