Hotham's AU$8.4 million Wastewater Reuse and Water Conservation Project was highly commended for the Water Award. This joint initiative with the Victorian State Government takes treated wastewater, treats it to Class A standard, and then re-uses this treated water for snowmaking at Hotham Resort. The ski fields of Mt. Hotham use between 70 and 120 million litres of water for snowmaking annually. The new system provides a minimum of 60 million litres of treated water. Hotham has, as a result, been able to extend its snowmaking capacity and area into the popular Heavenly Valley area this season. The concept and program have taken five years and included the construction of an Ultra Filtration Plant, including a 27 megalitre storage dam with six kilometres of pipeline between the reservoir and the snowmaking system at the resort. Hotham's commitment to sustainability in the ski industry in Australia has been so popular that the program was awarded third in the People's Choice category of the Banksia Awards.
