You know what mother always told you - breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You need that fuel in your tummy to make the most of your skiing and riding.
We'll get your day started. We've asked around and have some recommendations for you. We don't guarantee the calorie count and will make no attempt to keep you away from those snarky cinnamon buns. You're on your own, so dig in.
Utah: Visiting Park City, Utah? Jill Adler, OnTheSnow's Southwest editor who is also a local, often starts her day at the Main Street Deli, 525 Main St. "You order at the register and they yell for you when it's up," she says. "Get those awesome breakfast potatoes, but eat them on paper plates." Also dig into three-egg omelets and huevos rancheros (fried eggs on torillas, smothered with cooked salsa).
Colorado: Shannon Luthy, OnTheSnow's Colorado editor, lives in Steamboat and is a fan of Freshies, 595 Lincoln Ave. It's a locals favorite, and she says the line moves right along. The Sunrise Scramble is all mixed up with sautéed veggies scrambled with eggs, and fresh garlic topped with fresh avocado slices. Shannon also touts Winona's at 617 Lincoln Ave., especially for those great big, gooey cinnamon rolls.
Joan Christensen, who lives in Winter Park, says the quirkiest, but much loved, breakfast spot is the Coffee & Tea Market in the Balcony House at the ski area base. She says the cinnamon buns are "the size of mattress pads.. Also go for the raspberry croissants.
New Mexico: Looking for an interesting breakfast stop while vacationing at [R454, Taos Ski Valley] in New Mexico? Chris Stagg, who lives in the valley, recommends the Taos Cow in nearby Arroyo Seco. The place is perhaps better known for its ice cream, but breakfast is a good bet, too. Another place visitors enjoy is Michaels Kitchen Café & Bakery, 304 C N Pueblo Rd., three blocks north of the historic plaza. Try the golden brown pork chops and eggs.
You Texans heading to New Mexico and Ski Apache above Ruidoso, will certainly want to fuel up with breakfast at my favorite morning stop in the ski world, the Cornerstone Bakery Cafe (359 Suddereth Dr.). It's a tiny, unassuming spot that offers consistent gourmet quality breakfasts and Irresistible baked goodies. The Albuquerque Eggs Benedict is a rather decadent Southwest twist on the classic. The french toast is big, thick, and tasty like Texas Toast with syrup. Staff is friendly and quick and you never wait for coffee. Several blends of refills are right there at an always ready coffee bar. Go for the Thunderbolt or Pinon.
Oregon: Bend, Ore., is literally minutes away from Mt. Bachelor, one of the Pacific Northwest's top destinations. Bachelor's President and General Manager Dave Rathbun says that Nancy P's Baking Company, 1054 Northwest Milwaukee Ave., behind Newport Market, "is fabulous. Fresh made breads of all types, croissants, muffins, and pastries abound. A breakfast pocket or any egg sandwich combo on a warm croissant is hard to beat."
Western Canada: In the Banff, Alberta region and skiing The Big Three resorts? Local Liz Robins suggests the Creekside at Sunshine Village in the Creekside building at the bottom of the gondola. She says, "Get your breakfast here -- the bagels are particularly good -- and eat them on the 17-minute gondola ride up to the ski area. You'll save time and get on the slopes faster."
The Crystal Hut on Blackcomb Mt. in B.C., is a real locals favorite, says Amber Turnau, who works for the resort company. You'll find the cozy log cabin atop the Crystal Lift and she says the Belgian Waffles with the works, is a great way to start the day. Turnau's personal favorite in the valley is the Southside Diner. Decide between the Southside Slam, Miss Piggy, Bennies, Brie-stuffed french toast or the BELTCH (you don't want to know).
California: Lake Tahoe is loaded with choices, but Rob Brown, a skier, fisherman, and hunter with long ties to the region, has a personal favorite for breakfast. It's the Log Cabin in King's Beach at 8692 Lake Blvd on the North Shore. It's a small cabin, but you can call ahead and get your name on the wait list. Brown suggests trying the lobster scramble-in or the smoked trout eggs benedict if fish is your wake-up call.
Dan Pistoresi, another Tahoe denizen, offers up three choices: Fire Sign Cafe is off the beaten path at 1785 W. Lake Blvd in Tahoe City and not on most visitor's radar. You'll find his local stash is situated between Homewood Mountain Resort and Alpine Meadows on the West Shore. Crest Cafe, Rte. 80 and Alpine Meadows Rd., has quick breakfast-on-the-go options when headed to either Alpine Meadows or Squaw Valley. It overlooks the Truckee River. The Squeeze In Cafe, 10060 Donner Pass Road, is a great option in downtown Truckee.
Michigan: Mike Terrell, OnTheSnow's Midwest Editor, loves to stop for breakfast at the Edgewater Bistro, 100 Michigan Ave. in Charlevoix, when he's on his way to ski Boyne Mt. or Nubs Nob from the Traverse City area. "They serve all the traditional breakfasts, but add a few wrinkles, such as breakfast pizza, breakfast club sandwiches, and even chicken and waffles, served with southern-style white gravy."
Another favorite stop for Terrell is the Café Sante, 1 Water St., in Boyne City.Terrell suggests going for the French Toast Tower or the mushroom shirred eggs. "Very yummy."
New England: John Clifford is a veteran ski industry marketer and has two breakfast choices to recommend. "For a really fun, funky, casual and unique breakfast experience and the best waffles on the planet, you have to try Blanche and Bill's Pancake House, 586 U.S. Route 4 in Bridgewater just east of the Killington gondola," Clifford says. "The menu is written on white sheets of paper pinned to balls and written in Magic Marker with some of the craziest names you can imagine. They have more ways to mix and match eggs, pancakes, waffles, bacon, ham, and toast than anyplace on earth."
Clifford's other suggestion isn't a place, but a food. "it is only available in one place, Mallard Mart, in Bethel, Maine, near Sunday River Resort and the food is none other than Breakfast Pizza. It is pizza dough, but with an egg and cheese (with a choice of bacon or sausage) topping that just melts in your mouth. The recipe is a secret. Wash it down with a cup of Nantucket Blend Green Mountain coffee."
Roger Leo covers the New England region for OnTheSnow.com says the breakfast at the Inn at Ellis River in Jackson, N.H., is "fabulous." It's a luxury B&B in the heart of the White Mountains that continually wins hospitality awards. But, he notes, there's a catch: You have to be staying at the inn but, "it's worth it for the breakfast alone."
My favorite breakfast stop in New England is Up For Breakfast on Route 7 (4935 Main Street) in Manchester Center, Vt. Look for an awning next to Christo's Restaurant and head up the stairs next to the building. Service has been great here for the past decade or so and the portions are really big. The egg dishes are fascinating, critics on line are loving the Scandinavian eggs, walnut pancakes, and venison sausages.
I admit to being a breakfast lover, but even I couldn't have breakfast everywhere in the ski world, so we welcome your suggestions about other fine restaurants you would recommend to vacationing skiers and riders.
