Washington ski resorts chug along into April to offer skiers and riders the longest season possible. But White Pass looks forward to its season closing as that signals the long-awaited expansion of the resort.
Resorts across the state plunge into April for skiing and riding with some attempting to last into May. Those on the east side of the state close first. Bluewood celebrates its annual end of season bash April 3 while Mt. Spokane and 49 Degrees North run through April 4. The latter-49 North-even adds days during its last week instead of closing as usual on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The resort plans to operate daily March 29 through April 4 for Toyota Free Ski Week when all Toyota drivers can get free lift tickets.
Cascade Mountain ski areas run later. Mission Ridge runs through April 13. Crystal Mountain operates daily through April 18. Stevens Pass winds up daily operation April 4, running Thursdays through Sundays April 8-11 and 15-18. The Summit at Snoqualmie has stayed open the past four years until May 5; however, this year's snowpack will most likely force an earlier closure, but dates haven't been announced yet. Night skiing will go first followed by Summit West and Summit Central with Alpental remaining open until the end. Mt. Baker continues daily operation through April 10 before shifting to its weekends-only schedule for as long as conditions hold out.
White Pass plans to operate daily through April 4, followed by two additional days for closing weekend April 10-11. The end of the season at White Pass signals the start of the long-awaited expansion of the resort when chairs arrive. The resort is ballooning next winter with two new lifts and more terrain.
Trails were cut and towers installed for the new lifts before this winter started in preparation for the expansion. The Basin Expansion is scheduled to be completed in fall 2010. The addition includes one fixed grip lift to access four new trails and a detachable quad to service seven new trails. A mid-mountain lodge is proposed between the two lifts, but will be constructed at a later date.
