Fernie and Kimberley Alpine Resorts wind up their winter seasons in April. Locals are grabbing the last runs before ironing summer wax on their boards. Then, they'll dust off their mountain bikes, hiking shoes, and golf clubs for the end-of-June re-opening of the resorts.
Kimberley's winter season finishes April 5 after the annual Spring Splash Celebration weekend April 3-4 with live music and activities.
Fernie's slopes stay open longer. Closing day for Fernie is April 11; however, the resort adds on its Bonus Weekend April 17-28. The Bonus Weekend-the Fernival-brings on live music, DJs, and wacky events for fun.
Both resorts plan to re-open for summer the last week in June. Summer seasons runs through August, but the resorts are planning a tentative Summer Bonus Weekend Sept. 4-6.
Fernie runs Thursdays through Sundays for lift-accessed hiking and mountain biking. Sightseers can take a scenic chairlift ride to Lost Boys Café for views of the Fernie Valley and surrounding peaks. Hikers can take guided tours of the rocky crest of the Lizard Range at Fernie, and bike camps are offered for women or kids.
The mountain bike scene rages at Fernie in summer. The slopes plunge with the most mountain biking trails in the region. Two events-the Uphill Lungbuster in July and Full Throttle in August-pack out the slopes with racers, and those passing through without gear can rent bikes and helmets.
Kimberley features scenic chairlift rides and golf. The resort runs its North Star Express Quad for summer sightseeing 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends and holidays. Trickle Creek Golf Course offers 18 holes in a wooded setting near the base of the resort.
