Spirit Mountain, overlooking Duluth's beautiful Lake Superior harbor, has tentatively set its closing date for the last Sunday in March with longer spring hours - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - kicking in March 22. It's been such a great season, it's hard to think about it coming to an end, but events are scheduled before it does. Get out and enjoy some of the best skiing and riding of the season with the longer, warmer days.
Spring Break Luau takes place Saturday, March 13, with lots of slopeside activities and competitions. There will be prizes for the best costume and, in the past, they've had a Jimmy Buffet clone band playing in the Moosehead Saloon. Calling all parrotheads.
But, before that, Spirit is providing free ski and snowboard lessons for beginners Sunday, March 7 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. You need to be 13 years and up. The lesson, which normally costs $45, includes free equipment rental. Reservations need to be made at least 48 hours ahead. Call the number listed below to reserve your spot, and don't delay. It fills up.
March 6-7 is a USASA competition. Snowboarders compete in a double halfpipe competition Saturday and slopestyle Sunday. The superpipe will be closed to the general public most of the day that Saturday. Sunday the superpipe will be open to the public, but a portion of the terrain park will be closed. It will be worth it to watch the competition. This is one of the best in the Midwest. It's where pro-snowboader Mason Aguirre honed his skills as a youngster.
