Val d'Isère is hosting "Pistes gourmandes, la cuisine pure" March 15-20, an event dedicated to the discovery of authentic and ethical products as well as a chance for the public to meet several grand French chefs.

A Golden Spoon cooking contest with professional and amateur categories, culinary shows, and cooking classes in both English and French, wine tastings, and book signings with chefs are on the programme of the gourmet gathering.

The Golden Spoon cooking contest is a woman-only event this year, as cooking is traditionally what a woman did best in the home, but paradoxically, the world's finest kitchens remain a mostly masculine affair. Marc Bauer, mayor of Val d'Isère notes that "this contest puts the women of the gastronomic world in the spotlight...and we are thrilled to honour them."

The event also brings the issue of fairtrade and organic agriculture to the table, with special attention paid to the origin of the ingredients - all must be grown or produced under environmentally friendly conditions and adhere to the idea of fair trade.

Visitors will thus be able to discover local cuisine and culinary traditions as well as fresh ideas on sustainable cooking.

Guests interested in registering for the cooking classes and the wine tastings should contact the tourism office of Val d'Isère.
