An evening "torchlight" parade is part of Liberty's Winter Olympics Celebration.

Liberty Mountain in Pennsylvania plans to celebrate the Winter Olympics as they run through Feb. 28 at Whistler Blackcomb and Cypress Mountain outside Vancouver, British Columbia. A big screen monitor will broadcast Olympic events.

"We wanted to do something special for the Winter Olympics," said Marketing Director Anne Weimer. "We wanted to support and honor the athletes, the sports and the countries involved."

Various Liberty departments will adopt countries participating in the Games throughout the 16-day period. Departments will represent their adopted countries by decorating in their country's colors. Countries (Liberty departments) will go head-to-head in Liberty's own Olympic Games. Guests are invited to join the competition.

Locals can benefit during the Olympics period on Customer Appreciation Day Feb. 18. Anyone living in Fairfield, Gettysburg, Ortanna, Cashtown, Carroll Valley, or Emmitsburgh gets a 50 percent discount on lift tickets, lessons, rentals, and snow tubing. A valid photo ID is required.

Liberty has been in the eye of most storms that have ripped through the mid-Atlantic this winter. Natural snow has fallen consistently since the big storm before Christmas and, with the exception of a warming trend in mid-January, cold weather has allowed the mountain to make snow when needed. The mountain is 100 percent open.
