Slovenia's ski resorts have revamped their facilities this winter season, adding new lifts, children's facilities, and more freestyle fun.

Maribor Pohorje, Slovenia's largest ski area, added a new gondola lift which transports skiers from the foot of the slopes to the summit of the Pohorje Mountain. It takes six minutes and offers double the capacity of the old lift.

Kranjska Gora, Slovenia's most popular resort, has expanded its facilities for families with a free-of-charge children's outdoor play area and a new magic carpet lift. Over in the northwest of the country, Cerkno has added a snowpark for adrenalin seekers.

The resort of Kanin, the highest ski centre in the country, is now the first internationally linked resort in Slovenia: a new piste linking Slovenia's Kanin resort with the Italian Sella Nevea resort opened Dec. 2009.

Slovenia's thriving ski scene is characterised by traditional small-scale resorts with typical wooden chalets and well-groomed pistes. English is spoken widely in Slovenia and the country hosts various international ski competitions, such as the FIS World Cup and European Cup competitions.

While advanced skiers may find Slovenia lacking in challenging terrain - there's nothing in the way of large linked areas - the region offers good value for money for beginners and intermediates.
