Sugar Bowl celebrates its 70th anniversary this weekend with festivities and special lift ticket rates. The resort at Donner Summit plans to feature events that include prize giveaways, live music, trivia challenges, and the official christening of the new Summit Chair.
The resort, whose location was chosen in part by Walt Disney, opened in 1939 with California's first chairlift. Lift tickets cost 25 cents, and those skiing Mount Disney coughed up $2. The resort sprouted 13 lifts over the years, its most recent installed this summer.
A weekend of festivities is scheduled to commemorate the 70th anniversary Jan. 29-31. Daily CORE members can purchase lift tickets on Friday for $39. Joining CORE is free and available online. Prizes will also be given away on Friday morning in the Judah Lodge as the television airs Daron Rahlves from Sugar Bowl competing in the skiercross at the Winter X Games.
The resort plans to cut the ribbon on its new Summit Chair Saturday at 10 a.m. The new Backcountry Adventure Center will offer professionally-guided powder tours, avalanche safety educational seminars, and guided lake runs from Sugar Bowl to Donner Lake below. The Truckee Tribe is lined up to fill the Judah Lodge with music in the afternoon.
Sunday features a trivia challenge. Search for secret stashes of prizes across the mountain with clues dropped in the answers to Sugar Bowl trivia. A special Winter X Games viewing party will be held in the morning in Judah Lodge if Rahlves advances to the finals. Prize giveaways are tied to his overall performance and results.
