Wolf Ridge in North Carolina recently reported one of its best holiday periods in years. It got its fair share of snow from the pre-Christmas storm that roared through the mid-Atlantic. Sustained unusually cold temperatures for this time of year have provided optimal snowmaking conditions.

Wolf Ridge sits atop a mountain range about 25 miles north of Asheville, a unique, modest-size mountain city that has become a Mecca for the arts, theater, and retirees. The resort's 84 acres and 700 feet of vertical terrain include 20 trails serviced by two quads, two double chair lifts, a surface lift, and a magic carpet. Its 4,700 foot elevation offers views of 75 miles that can be seen from accommodations ranging from luxury log cabins to townhouses.

Family Ski and Stay packages are custom designed for families of up to seven individuals so there is no standard package price. Accommodations are listed on the Wolf Creek Web site (see More Information below) for guests to review and then call the toll free number to reserve. The resort will knock off $100 from the listed price on accommodations booked Sunday to Thursday.

Wolf Ridge is experiencing a major growth spurt with a master plan that eventually will span single family homes, condos, a skating rink, a village and additional lifts. Completed amenities include a glass enclosed heated pool with a water slide, and the Poolside Cafe.

Dining options are somewhat limited but the resort's close proximity to Asheville allows for multiple entertainment choices including budget, moderate, or pricy restaurants, and regional tourist attractions such as the Grove Park Inn and the Biltmore, America's largest home.
