White Pine Ski Area hosts the third annual Wyoming Senior Winter Games this winter. The four-day event features both indoor and traditional outdoor winter sports that include alpine skiing.

Competitions for Wyoming's Senior Winter Games, which are open to those 50 years and older, take place in various locales around Pinedale Feb. 10-14. But the alpine skiing events are scheduled on the slopes of White Pine Ski Area. The event is open to Wyoming residents, plus competitors hailing from outside the state.

The $30 registration fee includes entries to as many events as you want. The fee also includes a chili, soup or stew dinner, guest speakers, a race bag, and the final banquet dinner. Registration starts Feb. 10, with competitions beginning Feb. 11 along with a torchlight parade at 5 p.m. to open the Games.

Alpine skiing events include giant slalom, short slalom, and long slalom races. The giant slalom race sets 40 gates over a slope that drops 850 vertical feet while the long slalom turns through 45 gates set tighter in less vertical. The short slalom uses only 20 gates set in 220 feet of vertical. The short slalom qualifies seniors over 70 years old for the Nordic-Alpine Combination, and the long slalom qualifies those 50 years and older for the Nordic-Alpine Combination. Skiers may only enter the short or long slalom-not both.

Skiers race in age groups for women and men with two runs for each event. The best time of the two runs is recorded in the competition for medals.

White Pine also hosts the Nordic events, which include a 2K snowshoe race, a 3K biathlon, 2.5- and 5-kilometer classic and skate races, and a 5K Nordic relay. Another relay event combines alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

Ski racers can purchase discounted lift tickets by presenting their bibs at the ticket booth on the day of their event. Four Pinedale hotels also offer discounts to Wyoming Senior Winter Games participants with rates running $59-89 per night, depending on the hotel and occupancy.
