Snow and ice are good for more than skiing and skating. Snow and ice are part of the canvas lining the streets of Breckenridge for the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships, which return to Breckenridge for the 20th time, Jan. 26-31.

Sixteen teams travel to Summit County. Teams are representing nine countries including Canada, China, Czech Republic, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, Mongolia, Russia. The United States is represented by competitors from Alaska, Idaho, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Colorado teams are from Loveland and host Breckenridge.

The four-person teams are given a 12-foot-tall, 20-ton block of machine-made Colorado snow. They have five days to create a sculpture, without the use of power tools, internal support structures, or colors. Judging of the competition is Saturday, Jan. 30. Prizes are for first, second, and third place, as well as People's Choice, Kids' Choice, and Artists' Choice.

Breckenridge offers a special lodging deal that week. Book three nights of lodging and three days of adult lift tickets through Breckenridge Central Reservations and you get an extra night of lodging and an additional day of adult skiing. Prices start at $128 per person, per night. The deal is offered Jan. 5 through Feb. 10.
