June Mountain will not operate this summer or for the upcoming 2012/2013 winter season. Mammoth Mountain Ski Area Chairman and CEO, Rusty Gregory, made the announcement yesterday. The closure is effective immediately. 

According to Gregory, Mammoth Mountain has financially subsidized June Mountain since its purchase in 1986. The meager snowfall and drop in visits this past winter hit Mammoth hard and forced the company to make drastic cuts throughout the season. June Mountain alone was forced to lay off 75 permanent employees. 

When the mountain was purchased, there were plans to expand terrain, build new facilities and possibly even connect the two resorts. These proposals never came to reality for various reasons, which left June with an identity crisis.

“It is time to invest some of this subsidy into the analysis and planning required to position the resort for a sustainable future, then secure the approvals and financing required to create it,” Gregory said. 

The closure will allow the company to dedicate its focus toward a new future for the mountain. 

All scheduled weddings and special events at June will proceed as planned, and Mammoth Mountain will continue to run full operations this summer and forward.
