The Matterhorn Ski Safari above Zermatt makes it possible to ski the entire international ski area (It crosses over to terrain above Cervinia in Italy) in one day. Skiers can get as far as Valtournenche in Italy on one of the world's longest single vertical descents without having to use the same run or the same lift twice.
A special piste map showing the sequence of runs, marked in gold and numbered is available. Participants set out from the Rothorn paradise valley station in Zermatt and have the option of the 41,250, or a shorter 33,000 vertical feet route.
Although the full Safari is not currently open, Zermatt is open year round and currently has 17 miles of piste open, served by Euirope's highest lifts, and has received fresh snowfall in mid-October.
