Afton Alps, one of the Twin Cities' largest ski areas, is celebrating the longer daylight hours and warmer temps with its Spring Fling Saturday, March 17. It’s always fun for the whole family.
Events include a NASTAR swim suit race; bikinis optional. There’s also a scavenger hunt and prizes for the best decorated helmets. For the adults there will be an ice bar on the deck, which hopefully will be a good place to watch the bikini race. Live entertainment will be taking place from 12:30-4:40 p.m on the deck at Paul's Pub.
For the kids there is Dough in the Snow; actual money buried in the snow on the slopes. Little sand shovels that you find on the beach are perfect for digging up the money.
The last Rock & Ride – a snowboard, twin-tip freestyle event – of the season will also be taking place that Saturday.
Family Value Day takes place this coming weekend, March 10-11, from 2 p.m to close; two lift tickets for $52 and half-off rentals. Additional family members can be added for $22 each.
Food Shelf Days takes place March 24-25, when lift tickets are $8 with a donation of four non perishable food items.
Afton Alps is located on an L-shaped bluff overlooking the scenic St. Croix River valley. It features long beginner runs, interesting intermediate cruisers and a trio of steep headwalls, which is what you see when first arrive at the area. With over 40 runs – all of them girl’s names – spread out over nearly 300 acres, there’s plenty to chose from for all.
