It's hard to beat West Virginia's Canaan Valley for variety. It is one of the few regions in the mid-Atlantic that offers alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing all within a few miles. All can actually be done in one day. January is an excellent time for sampling - particularly mid-week.

Canaan Valley Resort's ski and stay package is priced at $69 per night midweek, per person, double occupancy. It includes lodging, lift tickets, breakfast, Beech Club privileges, a group lesson, and a $2 discount coupon for the resort's tubing park. The package is per person, double occupancy.

Weekend prices are $225 for a two-night minimum stay for the same package each day excluding the group lesson. Martin Luther King weekend rates are $331 for a three-night minimum package. College students with a valid ID can take advantage of Canaan's $61 per night package Jan. 3 - 14.

The resort also offers cross-country skiing and it is right up the road from the White Grass Nordic Center widely known for its 45 trails spilling over 50 kilometers. White Grass is offering free snowshoeing and cross-country skiing Winter Trails Day Jan. 10.

A few hours of snowshoeing or cross country skiing can work up an appetite and there is no better place to satisfy hunger than at the White Grass Café, a cozy, laid back restaurant that almost looks like grandma's kitchen - only a bit larger. The Café serves up a wide range of natural and home-cooked food including vegetarian soups, shepherd's pie, honey glazed pork loin and grilled salmon. Cookies, pies and cakes all are home made.

No trip to Canaan Valley is complete without a stop at the café which is open to the public whether or not they use the trails at White Grass.  Meal prices range from $13 - 20 and reservations are recommended.
