In Northern Idaho, a party breaks out every February. The annual Winter Carnival comes to Sandpoint Feb. 17-26, 2012 with Schweitzer Mountain Resort capping off the fun with fireworks.

On Feb. 17, day one of Winter Carnival opens in Sandpoint with two favorite events. The Bio-Luminesce Fire Dancers perform at 6:30 p.m at the Pend d’Oreille Winery, an act that melds acrobatics, dance, yoga, and movements with flames. From 7-9 p.m in the Jeff Jones Town Square, the rail jam pits skiers and snowboarders in contest for freestyle technique. A 30-foot-wide, 100-foot-long rail provides the features for the action.

Horses enter the ski action Feb. 18-19. Ski joring debuted in last winter’s event to audience acclaim, and this year’s competition adds divisions for juniors and women. The afternoon of the second day features skiers and snowboarder being pulled by a horse to throw tricks off jumps.

On Feb. 18-19, Schweitzer opens the Nastar gates to first-time racers for free. Other events include a village scavenger hunt, poker skiing, a snowshoe hike, night skiing, tubing sessions, snow volleyball, and a Wii dance tournament.

Schweitzer caps off the Winter Carnival celebration with night skiing, tubing, and outdoor shows Feb. 24-25. The Outrageous Air Show, which features Olympic and local skiers, launches at 5 p.m. A torchlight parade with fireworks lights up the slopes followed by theme parties in Taps.
