Camelback learning programs get a huge boost in early January during a segment airing Jan. 4 on NBC's "Today Show' featuring international ski icon Glen Plake giving television personality Hoda Kotb a ski lesson. The Poconos resort hosted a December taping that highlights Learn a Snow Sport Month nationwide. Plake is the national spokesperson.
Camelback was a good choice for the show. The resort offers a wide range of beginner to racer ski and snowboard learning programs including adaptive and the Burton Learn to Ride program for women.
Those wanting to improve their skills or introduce friends to snow sports will find a wealth of information on the Learning Center section of Camelback's Web site. One unique feature is the Learn to Ski/Ride Check List. It's particularly helpful to beginners. The site covers tips on what to expect before arriving at the resort and while in a lesson, how to dress, and safety issues.
Group lessons at Camelback start at $30. Lesson packages including a beginner lift ticket, lesson, and rentals costs $80.
"You don't have to be an expert to have fun on the snow but you need to know some basics," said Plake. He made his mark as an extreme skier and now makes surprise visits to smaller resorts espousing the fun of snow sports. Plake attracted the attention of numerous fans during his stealth Camelback visit and he returns to Pennsylvania in January for his "Down Home" Tour. He will be at Whitetail Jan. 13 and Seven Springs a day or two later. Most stops are unannounced.
