Parents often wonder how young to start kids skiing and snowboarding. How about two years old?
Blue Mountain Resorts, Ontario's largest snowsport’s resort, has some interesting programs for young skiers including two-year-olds. If you’re looking for a day of childcare for your toddler or a ski program for a young downhill enthusiast, the resort's Kids’ Camp staff have programmed activities for youngsters to enjoy all day long.
Jenna Miller, a veteran Kids at Blue Mountain instructor, offers some quick tips to help children get the most out of a lesson program.
“Prepare the child for his/her day by stressing the fun they will have, and plan on arriving about a half-hour early for the lesson,” she stresses. “It will help the child relax and get ready. Bring along extra socks, mitts and additional layering pieces.
“Goggles and helmets are recommended but not mandatory. Helmets are available to rent for $10 per day,” Miller added. “It's a good idea to label all belongings including skis and boots with your child's name.”
A 45-minute Tiny Tot skiing or snowboarding guided experience, which takes place in the resort’s animated Kid Zone, is aimed at introducing skiing or snowboarding to the youngster through snow play. Skill development is individually geared to each little snow bunny. A lesson is $59 CA ($58.07 US), and you can add rental equipment for an additional $10.
The Junior Kids Camp is for both new skiers and 3- to 5-year-olds that can ride a lift and ski more challenging terrain. It’s available as a half-day or full-day program. The full day includes lunch. Half-day programs are $65 CA ($63.99 US) for just the lesson and $10 more with rental equipment. Full-day programs are $125 CA ($123.05 US) and an additional $19 for rental equipment.
Senior Kids Camp for 8 to 12 year old skiers and snowboarders also comes in half-day and full-day programs with lunch included. The cost for a half-day is $94 CA ($92.54 US) for a lift, lesson and rental equipment. The full-day program is $134 CA ($131.92 US).
The Kids at Blue Centre is located at South Base Lodge and is open daily from 9 a.m to 3:45 p.m. Space is limited, therefore all programs must be pre-booked and prepaid by calling 877-445-0231. Follow this link for more information.
