Snowboarders new to the sport can chill and relax in Winter Park’s new Burton Experience Snowboard Lounge. It’s the new hangout in West Portal Station at the base area. “We have seen in previous years that we really needed to dedicate a space to guests who are learning to snowboard,” said Mistalynn Lee with Winter Park. “It takes the intimidation out of learning to ride because it is all one stop.”

The new lounge is where they sign up, meet their coach, and rent their gear. The Burton equipment is specific for beginning snowboarders. They’ll then go out on the hill and learn to board. After their lesson, they’re welcome to come back and hang out. “It’s a really relaxed environment,” said Lee. “There are big TVs, music, and leather couches. They’re comfortable right away and that helps with the anxiety about their first time snowboarding.”

Lee says the Burton lounge for beginners is a test to see if it is successful. If so, they’ll expand the clientele. “We’ll first try it with the learn-to-snowboard group.”

The grand opening is from 2-6 p.m this Saturday, Jan. 7. Everyone is welcome to attend. A lot of college kids are in Winter Park this weekend from out of state and Lee is hoping they’ll come in and check it out. An ice bar out front will provide drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic and the band Oakhurst will be playing at the Derailer Bar & Grill.
