Northstar California kicks off the New Year with the opening of Tahoe’s first pipe of the season with their brand new, 22' Shaun White signature superpipe.
The superpipe has 22-foot walls, is 500 feet long, and is made entirely out of snow, unlike many other superpipes. The location is on the Cat's Face trail, which can be accessed by Vista Express chair.
Shaun White, who is arguably the best pipe snowboarder in the world with two Olympic gold medals, formed a partnership with Vail Resorts this year and worked closely with Northstar to design the new halfpipe. Although there is no sign of him at Northstar just yet, his superpipe is now available to the public.
"Our 22' Superpipe was built to provide resort guests with a high quality, world-class halfpipe, as well as to provide Shaun White with what he needs to train for the upcoming events he will compete in this season," said Mike Schipani, Northstar's terrain park manager. "It's not often that the public gets to ride the same competition quality pipe that an athlete of Shaun's caliber trains in. We're excited not only to offer one of the few 22' Superpipes in the country, but also to get it open this early in the season for our guests to experience."
The pipe is scheduled to be open all season long for guests to enjoy. White will also use the pipe for training, but no dates have been announced just yet.

The superpipe was designed in conjunction with Snow Park Technologies (SPT), the world’s leading consulting team for special projects on snow. SPT is dedicated to the design, construction and progression of terrain park development. The company is most famous for designing and building high profile ski and snowboard competition courses, such as Winter X Games courses and Winter Dew Tour, as well as terrain parks around the country. SPT will be working with other Vail owned resorts, such as Heavenly, Buttermilk, Aspen Snowmass, Snow Summit and Vail.
Over 700 hours have been logged by Northstar’s snowmaking and terrain park crews to design every detail of the new superpipe in order to find the best place for it, the best pitch, consistency of the snow made, when it would be pushed and the precision of the cut.
"We're thrilled to be opening the first 22' Superpipe in Tahoe tomorrow for our guests to enjoy," said Bill Rock, chief operating officer at Northstar. "This is a huge accomplishment, and I'm proud of our team and how they've worked together to deliver a world-class pipe for Shaun White to train in, as well as any of our guests who aspire to be like Shaun."
