To experience authentic European tradition without the flight, pay a visit to the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt. Owned and run by the von Trapp family, who’s story inspired “The Sound of Music,” this once small and rustic family home has since grown into a striking 96-room alpine Lodge filled with history and culture.
On the 2,500-acre mountaintop lot, they’ve carefully identified 40 km of perfect terrain for laying tracks on ungroomed snow. Nordic and downhill skiers will have no problem finding a fresh line and if you’re new to backcountry skiing, their expert staff can provide the equipment, lesson and guided tour to maximize your experience.
Plan a mid-day rendezvous with trail-bound friends at the Slayton Pasture Cabin, nestled in the woods behind the Lodge and replenish the energy reserves with home-made soups and a sandwich.
For dinner, head back to the Main Dining Room in the Lodge for European dining with distinctive Vermont charm and enjoy a glass of Trapp Lager, brewed on-site. Wind down the night with a soak in the hot tub at the Fitness Center and retire to the luxury of a spacious room or suite.
