Most anyone who has hit the slopes of Durango Mountain Resort has been stopped in their tracks by the drop-dead views of the backcountry in the San Juan Mountains. The massive expanse of untracked, powder-filled terrain is like few others in the Rocky Mountains.
And, San Juan Ski Company wants to deliver the deep stuff right to the powderhounds who are jonesing for it. While most trips cater to the experienced steep-and-deep skier or riders, a new offering this season permits those adventurous newbies to go into the wilds and discover the joy of untracked snow.
Full-day trips cost $250, with a guarantee that skiers and riders won’t cross tracks with anyone who came before, or your money back. Pricing differs for special trips, including learn-to-ski-powder days, clinics on the steeps, guided tours behind snowmobiles and family trips. Half-day trips are also available. Prices include avalanche safety gear, water bottle and one-ride ticket to the top of Durango Mountain Resort, where backcountry trips begin. Private parties can have their own snowcat rides for $2,500.
The Durango Mountain Resort-based snowcat operation has a permit for more than 36,000 acres of remote terrain—reportedly more acreage than all Colorado resorts combined. It contains everything from tree runs, bowls and cliffs, and offers up 2,000-foot descents and high-speed cruisers. The permitted area covers 10 major drainages in the San Juan National Forest.
