The mega storm that hit the Mid-Atlantic prior to Christmas should continue to ensure good to excellent holiday week and early season snow conditions for resorts despite warming temperatures and likely rain surrounding Christmas Day in some areas. More terrain opens daily thanks to nightly drops in temperatures.

Pennsylvania's Whitetail, just north of Hagerstown, Maryland, had already opened 85 percent of its terrain before Christmas. Liberty Mountain, near Gettysburg, reported its best start for the season in years.  Ski Roundtop was more than 80 percent open before Christmas.

The early season storm provided a good base for resorts in its path.  While North Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia resorts benefitted most from the pre Christmas storm - with Virginia's Wintergreen citing a 30 inch accumulation - the majority of  resorts further north in the region are in full swing during the Christmas to New Year holiday week.

Even some of the later opening Pennsylvania resorts started operating just prior to the holidays with better than average snow cover.  Ski Sawmill is open seven days a week after Christmas from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.  Eagle Rock is offering packages starting at $196 for two, double occupancy, at The Inn including two adult lift tickets and snow tubing passes. Up to two children less than 12 years of age stay free in the same room with their parents.

The Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association provides updated information on resorts in that state.
