Most experienced skiers and snowboarders know someone who wants to learn.  Getting family members and friends to do so early in the season has its benefits. They have the entire winter to practice.

Virginia's Bryce Mountain is one of the easier resorts for beginning skiers and snowboarders to access with its location 11 miles west of I-81 in the Shenandoah Valley, about two hours from Washington, D.C.  It's a good starting point for those who may have gotten ski or snowboard equipment for Christmas. The resort has an enticing learn to ski or ride package for those nine or older. Equipment rentals, a 75 minute group lesson, carpet lift/slope use ticket start at $59 for juniors 9 - 12 years old and $64 for adults 13 - 64.

West Virginia's Canaan Valley charges adults $30 for a 1.5 hour group lesson.  Juniors pay $25. Lift tickets must be purchased separately. The beginners lesson concentrate on moving through snow, stopping and turning. Lessons for experienced skiers and snowboarders also are available.

Additional learing programs are offered at Virginia and West Virginia resorts through January and beyond.
