I would have recieved a serious head injury if I had not had a helmet on. I had a person who was standing next to me holding their skis without looking this person turned stricking me in the head. The skis left quite a cut in my helmet. if not for my helmet my day of skiing would have been over and I would have gone to the hosp. for stitches. The cut in my helmet was 4" long and very deep.
I banged my head once on the side of a box in the terrain park after i fell of it. had it not been for my helmet, i would have had a concussion but luckily all i had was a little head ache.
That is just a shame. One of my friends had a friend who was skiing and hit a tree and broke his neck. He was in a coma and his family eventually pulled the plug. He wasn't wearing a helmet and it was a tragety.
i am shocked. people should wear helmets for like everything!!!!! i once went biking without a helmet and fell and hit my head on a tree. i got a concusion and was in the hospital for two weeks.(it was a bad one) i recovered but wore a helmet ever since. if it wasn't for my helmet i could have died.
So we all know that helmets are not the cure-all for injuries on the hill and never will be. That said, I wear one on the hill since anything it does to lessen injury is better than nothing. The same goes on a motorcycle. I wear one because anything it does to lessen injury is worth it being there. This article makes a GREAT point, that standards of performance for helmet construction and certification don't exist. Perhaps someone who knows more about the industry can comment on how we could start pushing for that? It could make helmets a bit more expensive, but if I can drive home at the end of the day, then it's a good day skiing. If NSP has to take me off and I'm carted to the local emergency room for lack of helmet, thats not a good day skiing and never will be. Please, anyone with some input on helmet standards - SOUND OFF - we need to hear from you.
