Angel Fire Resort is one of the closest ski and snowboard resorts to Texas and, every season, hordes of Lone Star staters make the drive to get their wintertime fix.

So the northern New Mexico resort has made it a tradition to build a weekend around all things Texan, called the Big Ol’ Texas Weekend. This season, it arrives on Jan. 27 with nonstop activities through Sunday, Jan. 29.

For the weekend, lift tickets have been cut by $12 for adults, $6 for teens and $3 for children for any person or family that brings a Texas driver's license to the ticket window. On both Friday and Saturday evenings, the resort will fire up the grills at the Angel Fire Country Club for a ribeye and BBQ beef brisket feast. Reservations need to be made by calling 575-377-3055.

The Friday lineup begins in the evening with a concert by singer-songwriter Max Gomez, from nearby Taos, from 4 to 7 p.m at the Village Haus. At 6 p.m, the resort turns on the lights for an hour-long practice session in the terrain park before the Friday Night Rail Jam begins in earnest at 7 p.m; entry fee is $5.

For the gamblers at heart, registration for a free Texas Hold ‘Em tournament begins at 6 p.m on the second floor of the Angel Fire Lodge. The first cards get dealt at 7 p.m, with prizes for winners.

The highlight of Saturday will be a steak-eating contest at noon on the mid-level deck of the base area. To sign up, click here. The day winds up with a concert by Kim & The Cabelleros in the Village Haus, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

On Sunday, there’s an all-mountain scavenger hunt that begins at 10 a.m. Clues can be found in the tent at the base of the Chile Express lift.
