Spain is experiencing extreme weather conditions with temperatures of -10°C, snowstorms, and dangerously icy roads in what is being called the "Siberian Effect".
Wind, snow and ice arrived in Spain Sunday night, and by Monday tempertures reached below freezing. Monday Dec. 14 was officially the coldest night of the year.
The central part of the peninsular, the city of Madrid and ski resorts such as Pinilla del Valle, Valdesqui, and Navacerrada, have seen the coldest tempertures with -10°C Monday night and snow falling at just 400 metres. The roads that surround these areas have been closed and the DGT (traffic information) have warned that travel is very dangerous due to the ice.
Today, ski resorts such as Baqueira Beret, Espot Esquí, and La Molina have woken up to a blanket of snow. 24 provinces remain are under alert as the rain and snow will continue throughout the day.
The airport Barajas in Madrid has had to delay and cancel many flights and the cities of Cataluña, Murcia, Castilla La Mancha, and Valencia have all been forced to cancel many trains.
The weather predictions for this week are that the "Siberian Effect" will continue today but will not get any worse during this week. By the weekend it looks to be getting colder again as a storm is moves in towards the peninsular from the Atlantic.
