Main ski area not for the beginner. NYSEF racers training.
Whiteface Mountain is an excellent all around ski mountain. Yes, it has a reputation for getting icy and windy (usual complaints from western "skiers") Remeber your skiing in the east. Keep an eye on the weather. If the forcast is for gusty wind and that's a problem, don't go. It's simple. Temperature changes of more than 10 degrees will produce wind even if not evidentat low elevations. Just something to keep in mind. I mention this because the mountain will shut down main lifts when the wind exceeds about 38+ mph in certain directions (crosswind to the lift). Amazingly, not so much shut down on the weekends. The mountain as a whole is the best in the east. Rarley crowded and somewhat bias toward advanced skiers. Call first to see which lifts are running or check the whiteface.com website. A con I have to mention is the NYSEF Racing training. The NYSEF racers take up at least one if not one and a half trails daily. These are still mentioned as open trails. The racers themselves tend to forget they are not on their desingnated course when skiing amongst the public. Every thing else about the mountain is nothing but praise. When the wind is calm and the sun is out, there is no better place in the east!
