I am a first-time 45 year-old skier. I took my wife and son (also beginners), and for $130 we rented equipment and purchased lift tickets (including a gondola ride). I thought the price was very reasonable. I rented a nice room in Ruidoso for $60, so we did this trip pretty cheap.
This year Ski Apache has endured a pretty dry season. Consequently, I was rather leary about things. But I must tell you I was really shocked at the large amount of snow that was on the slopes. Granted, a lot of the resort was not open (due to lack of natural snow), but the parts that were open ROCKED! As I mentioned, I am a beginner, so I was pretty thrilled with Lift 3, and Lift 4 was more than enough. And the many times that I wiped out were often followed by fellow skiers offering assistance.
I'll be back in 2010 for sure!
