I love this place. This is our third year skiing there. It is a lovely small mountain with 6 or 9 trails depending on how you count them. They have a great beginner trail, that I don't mind skiing on at all, when I'm teaching my son's friends. They have superb training programs, lessons and a ski school that starts with beginners and trains kids to be reallly safe, effective skiiers. Their bread and butter is local area high school and some college ski racing. My son, now 9 is in the Hot Shots ski program and has become a very good skiier. The classes are 2 hours both Sat and Sun and I can't say enough about them. The place is delightful, never crowded. The lodge is very pleasant, with wifi, a cafeteria, an nicer restaurant and bar upstairs. In good weather they cook out on the deck and have music.
I drive about 1 hour from Jersey City.
This year they got off to a slow start w/snow making because of an equipment problem, but all trails are now open. Last year they had super snow and snow making and we skiied till St Patricks day. There are some steep trails, and I'd say one of the few cons is one of the best trails often has a race going on on it - its not closed the full day, but usually in the morning. I'm there for the kids so I ahve no complaints as they have a blast and so do I. I'm a quite decent skiier but I don't have anything to prove, so I don't get bored.
Its not a place for people who expect a killington. People I've talked to say the trails at MountainCreek are not any harder- there are just more of them. But Creek is just crawling with people. I went once and will never go again. Rather eat glass. So if you have kids, or if you want to learn to ski as an adult, or if you don't ski alot, but would just like to get out and have a relaxing day of it it I highly reccomend it! Come early, the lots don't hold a ton of cars - although there are 1/2 day crowds so if you come at noonish there is turn over.
