Waterville is a great day trip from the Boston area, a quick 2 hour drive. It is a fantastic kids mountain, with a great ski school program (I should know, as it happens to be where I learned how to ski!) A solid place for beginners and intermediates, but as with many of the smaller mountains, there is not much for challenging terrain. Although fine for a weekend, if you are a fast skier it feels as if you can ski from top to bottom in seconds. Still, good family resort, and very close to Boston which has been a major draw when all I could fit in was one day. I will also mention that I have found the staff to be great at Waterville. Everyone from the instructors to the lift attendants to the bartenders I found to be friendly and full of smiles (always a nice thing on windy and cold New England day).

A tip: to avoid the lunchtime crowds, head to the top of the quad and grab a bowl of chowder at the Schwendi Hutte. They also have fondue....
