We skied 3 mountains in New Hampshire and Loon was definitely the best. Although we went to Cannon right after a snow storm, there was ice. 2 days later when we went to loon right after a rain storm, there was only a little bit of ice. The groomers do a great job and the high speed lifts keep lines smaller. The Thursday we went there there we seriously thought we were the only people there. the lift lines were non existent and we skied almost every trail because of it. You want to devote at least two days to Loon although it is not the largest mountain. There is terrain for everyone, except experts who will be a little disappointed. The North Peak area and the walking boss and flume runs are some of the best in the east (they have good pitch and aren't just cruisers). Not to mention the new South Peak area which is terrific. All three trails there are long, nice and have great views. It is the place to come when the main mountain is crowded. The new Ripsaw trail, which is good and has some decent pitch and a somewhat steep dropoff, is not as hard of a trail as they make it seem. The Kanc Quad area has a lot of good cruisers. The gondola is also a nice escape from the winter elements but the line can get long, especially on the weekends (use the 7 brothers lift during this time). Avoid weekends at Loon because the lines get long, parking goes fast (try and take a shuttle), and the trails get crowded. The only other problems i had with Loon, and i didn't have many, were that the lift tickets were expensive and the nightlife in the town is awful during the weeks. For the most part, the trail ratings were right about the ability level required to ski the the trail. I really liked Loon and recommend it to everyone.
