Each year we like to make one trip from the CT to the White Mtns. Last week we chose Cannon on a veteran skiers' recommendation. The place has an abundance of challenging terrain and distracting scenery. Take a long look at Echo Lake, Mt. Washington, or Franconia Notch before you plunge down one of the Front Five. Off to the right of each trail you can find moguls of varying steepness and size, making Cannon a great place to work on your bump technique. Up top on a weekday, I was frequently the only skier in sight on trails like Skylight that wind through dense snow-covered pines. Just wish the Cannonball Quad moved more quickly -- it's the only lift that serves the top of the mountain during the week. This place has an addictive old-school atmosphere and after two days of bliss, it was not easy to point the car south.
